Change the Scores

Here are two parallel box-and-whisker plots for the Numeracy scores of the class of Year 9 students of Example College. The small blue rings denote the 30 Numeracy scores for these students. Both plots are set to reflect the initial distribution of Numeracy scores, as shown by the configuration of the rings. The rings are movable.

The box-and-whisker plot on the left is fixed. The plot on the right is dynamic as explained below; note that its width has been increased for demonstration purposes only.

If some Numeracy scores change sufficiently (i.e. if some rings are moved) key features of the plot on the right will automatically adjust to reflect those changes.

Use your mouse to click and drag any blue ring to a new position along the scale. When you do this, look for the features of the dynamic box-and-whisker plot that change, and the ones that stay the same.

Press the Reset button at any time to see the original configuration.

Explore some scenarios (Reset after each scenario).
See what happens if, for example:
1. The lowest 2 scores increase to 426.
2. With targeted teaching, the scores for the five students now represented near the bottom of the red box increase to 530.
3. You focus teaching on middle students. The results for these students improve but the lowest scores decrease.
